Flu Season Is Coming! –

As we turn the page to September, there’s no escaping it – flu season is officially coming! Don’t panic, it’s actually a good thing! Did you know 70% of flu shot opportunities go unfulfilled? Well, they do. In fact, last year’s high flu levels mean even more consumers are likely to get a flu shot this season. So, why not do everything you can to make sure your patients understand the importance of not only receiving a vaccine, but the convenience of receiving it in your pharmacy?! September Spotlight Campaign: Flu Campaign

Now you may be wondering, “Where do I start?” Good question! The first step is to recruit patients for said vaccination. How do you do that? Another good question! Simply record and send a Flu Campaign to your patient population. What are three keys to a thriving vaccination program?

  1. Conquer Barriers To Entry: Obtain your National Provider Identification (it’s free to apply!) and use your authority as a pharmacist to administer vaccines. Also, take advantage of Collaborative Practice Agreements, because they allow pharmacists to contract with a physician and work under a clearly defined protocol.        
  2. Maintain Inventory Control: Determine which vaccines need be to stocked year-round vs. seasonal. Also, identify the needs of your patient population, and order inventory accordingly.
  3. Marketing / Patient Identification: Don’t be a reactive vaccinator! Establish who you want to market to in your community, and then target that demographic with bag stuffers, in-store signage, social media campaigns, and email/text communications – all of which helps patients to self-identify. Also, encourage primary care physicians to refer you their patients for vaccinations.
