While most often and famously associated with Halloween, October has been gaining popularity for hosting another important holiday—American Pharmacists Month. This 31-day celebration was created to shine light on these selfless frontline health workers, who took their commitment to a whole new level during the pandemic, risking their personal safety on a daily basis to keep the rest of us safe. From COVID-19 testing to administering life-saving vaccinations, and managing our chronic conditions, pharmacists are one of the most accessible and knowledgeable members of the health care community, and always go the extra mile to care for patients during a time of unprecedented uncertainty.
And since we are entering the 20th month of the pandemic, there is no better time to take a moment to recognize, celebrate, and express our sincere appreciation for the critical role pharmacists—and pharmacy staff—play in caring for our communities, as they make a significant impact on patients they serve each and every day.
Keep reading to learn a few ways you can join in the fun and celebrate your local community pharmacist—this October and beyond!
How to celebrate your pharmacist
Just say “Thank You”— Ever since we were kids, we were taught that saying thank you goes a long way, and that’s still true today—especially with your local pharmacy staff. While they love working hard to take care of you, you can be sure that they appreciate hearing your appreciation. So the next time you’re in the pharmacy, try sending a simple “thank you” back over the counter.
Post a review— We live in the digital age, and word of mouth spreads fast online. The internet is the first—and oftentimes the only—place customers go to get information, so if you really appreciate the wonderful, personalized care your pharmacy staff provides you, take a moment to share it online! Not only will your feedback be seen and greatly appreciated by the staff, but it will likely attract some new patients to the pharmacy (also greatly appreciated!).
Be an advocate for your health— A pharmacist’s core objective is to help you get healthy, and when you take an active role in your own health, you’re actually helping them do their job. So, get involved in your health! Unsure about a new medication? Ask a question—pharmacists are there to be a trusted source of information. And speaking of being an advocate for your health…
Get vaccinated!— While no vaccine is 100% effective, infectious disease experts agree that COVID-19 vaccines prevent more than 90% of severe disease1 with 97% of recent COVID-19 hospitalizations seen in people who are not vaccinated. This means the COVID-19 vaccines work, and if you haven’t already done so, get vaccinated ASAP! And while you’re at it, remember to get your flu shot, too!
Check out our directory to see where your closest local community pharmacist is located, stop in to get vaccinated for COVID-19 and the flu, and while you’re there, don’t forget to wish the staff a happy American Pharmacists month!
