NCPA STUDY DETERMINES PHARMACISTS’ PERSONAL CONNECTION WITH PATIENTS IS LEADING FACTOR IN MEDICATION ADHERENCE
Cloud-Based Patient Engagement Platform
Helps Automate Communications, Monitor Results
ALISO VIEJO, Calif. – July 10, 2013 – In a recent study by the National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA), Medication Adherence in America: A National Report Card, researchers found that of the many factors associated with medication non-adherence, the primary predictor of successful medication adherence practices is a patient’s personal connection with their pharmacist. The study also revealed that independent pharmacy staffs have the strongest relationships with patients, with nearly 90 percent of independent neighborhood pharmacy users reporting a strong sense of connection, compared to 67 percent among retail chain users and just 36 percent for mail-order users.
“As pharmacists, we know how important our role can be in a patient’s treatment plan, especially when it comes to medication adherence,” said Pete Crouch, PharmD, owner of Eden Drug Health Mart in Eden, N.C. “But with thousands of patients coming in each year and a small business to run, there simply isn’t enough time to build those relationships. I needed a new way to communicate with my patients and decided to team up with PrescribeWellness, whose patient engagement solution has already increased adherence among my customers.”
PrescribeWellness is a pharmacy-to-patient healthcare communications service designed to make it easier for retail pharmacies to help their patients improve medication adherence and more effectively manage their chronic disease treatments and prescriptions. PrescribeWellness provides an easy-to-use, cloud-based system for pharmacists to stay in contact with their patients without taking time away from their day-to-day activities.
“Once I introduced a new communications technology to help stay in touch with my patients, I immediately saw an increase in my prescription fills, with more than 3,000 additional fills coming in the first few months,” said Crouch. “Because I’m able to connect with my patients on a regular basis, for instance, when they forget to pick up their medication or on their birthday, our relationships are strengthened and adherence is way up.”
Dave Smith, another pharmacist in the PrescribeWellness network, saw a similar increase in adherence. Using messages recorded in his voice, Smith is able to reach out to each of his patients directly with simple welcome messages, refill reminders and even birthday greetings.
“I’ve seen a 10-percent increase in overall fills since teaming up with PrescribeWellness,” said Smith. “Not only are my patients really happy with the new system, but the improvements in medication adherence are helping to improve overall, long-term wellness.”
The NCPA’s findings further justify the growing trend toward preventive healthcare. As America’s most accessible healthcare professionals, pharmacists are at the center of the preventive healthcare renaissance for the more than 200 million patients who walk into retail pharmacies every week. Local pharmacist’s access, knowledge and position of trust make them the logical choice to help reverse the epidemic of chronic disease and serve as American’s preventive healthcare coaches in their communities.
“This new study by the NCPA validates our mission to increase communications between healthcare providers and patients, which in turn improves the health of all Americans,” said Al Babbington, CEO of PrescribeWellness. “Non-adherence is adding $300 billion to American’s healthcare costs every year. Pharmacists are leading the charge when it comes to preventive care and we’re proud to be making a direct impact on improving the lives of their patients.”
