A recent study by the National Community Pharmacists Association, Medication Adherence in America: A National Report Card, found that the single most important aspect of successful medication adherence among patients is their personal relationship with a pharmacist.
The study also revealed that staff members at independent pharmacies have a much stronger relationship with their patients, with nearly 90% of independent pharmacy users reporting a strong sense of connection. The bond felt by patients using independent pharmacies is much stronger than retail chain and mail-order users, who reported just 67% and 36% respectively.
These findings once again demonstrate the important role that pharmacists are playing in today’s healthcare system. The pharmacy is evolving from a medication dispensary to the center of preventive healthcare in this country.
Pharmacists know the important role they play when it comes to their patient’s health and the direct impact they can have on medication adherence. But when it comes to spending more time strengthening patient relationships, it’s the time that pharmacists are lacking, not the willingness to try.
