Many state leaders are turning to community pharmacists for help as they ramp up tracking and testing for COVID-19 . This comes after the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) issued federal authorization for pharmacists to administer COVID-19 tests earlier in April. Allowing independent pharmacists to conduct COVID-19 tests will relieve some of the pressure on current testing sites, and will help everyone mitigate the pandemic in our communities.
Leaders like Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and New York Governor Andrew Cuomo have allowed pharmacists to collect samples for COVID-19 testing. In New York, Governor Cuomo signed an executive order that allows more than 5,000 pharmacies to operate as testing locations and collection sites. This significantly increases the state’s ability to meet the rising demand for testing and lab services. New York has also expanded its criteria for testing to include essential and frontline workers.
Commenting on New York state’s ability to conduct testing, the dean of Wegmans School of Pharmacy, Dr. Christine Birnie said, “there is a pharmacy in every town, every small community and there is a pharmacist there who’s trained and ready to be able [to] assist. They may need some additional training to get the swabbing techniques and different procedures to be needed. But they are clinically prepared to assist in this COVID-19 crisis.”
PrescribeWellness now offers pharmacists the ability to purchase COVID-19 testing kits through our online purchase form. The testing kits, authorized for emergency use by the FDA, enable pharmacists to collect nasopharyngeal or nasal specimens to be sent to a lab for analysis. Our dedicated COVID-19 resource page also provides participating pharmacies with training resources, like swab demonstration videos and instructional documentation, to ensure effective specimen collection practices.
The recent support of pharmacists sheds light on the important role that pharmacists have in the community, especially during the developing pandemic. As pharmacists receive recognition during this time the perceptions of pharmacists as an essential provider will continue to shift in a positive direction.
